JCHA CAMPOUT - MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND 2005 Happy Trails Cowboy Campground, Chiloquin Oregon Most of us arrived on Friday afternoon in 90 degree weather. We set up our camps and took a look around. Bob had done wonders getting the camp ready for our arrival, though he was still putting gates on the corrals and tending to some last minute details. There 30 corrals and faucets within hose reach of all of them. He even had water buckets ready for us! The camping area has 15 or so individual sites and a couple that are big enough for 2-3 rigs. There were 21 horses in camp and 11 full campsites. Friday evening we had a terrific thunder and lightning show right in camp! I think the people were more fazed by it than the horses were. Then it rained for about an hour. This was just perfect to cool things down and settle the dust. Saturday morning it was still a little drippy, but all of us got ready and headed out to see the country. We had maps of the flagged trail system and the old roads and went in small groups in different directions. Within a hour it warmed up and off came all the rain gear! It was a beautiful day to ride. Saturday night we had one of those famous JCHA potlucks with a wide variety of goodies. The lawn area with the big fire pit was just the perfect place to hold it. Sunday morning about 5am it started raining.... and raining.... It didn't let up for several hours. Finally about 9:00am people started to pack up and headed home. I know I was really bummed. I wanted to get in one more great ride! By 10:30am everyone was on the road home.... except for Harry. He had decided to stick it out and see if the weather improved. Well.... it did! As you can see from a couple of the photos, Harry and Bob went for a great ride up on the ridge. I would like to thank our host, Bob Lafferty, for doing such a great job and tending to our every need. There's a lot of potential in Happy Trails Cowboy Campground and I bet every year we will see more innovative ideas! Debbie Davenport, JCHA Secretary A message from the owner:
